How to get to Heraklion, Crete |
- By air: The airport Nikos Kazantzakis
(airport Code: HER) is the only one in Heraklion. Heraklion
has 8-10 direct flights per day from Athens (ATH), 2-4 direct
flights per day from Thesaloniki (SKG), and 3-5 direct flights
per week from Amsterdam as well as Paris (Orly) via Transavia Airlines.
Depending
on the time of the year, there may also be frequent charter
flights from many major European cities (see web page). Taxi service is
provided just outside the airport. There are also a number
of car rental companies located in the airport.
- By sea: The Heraklion harbour is located
close to the city. There are three major ship companies on
the line: Athens-Heraklion. Minoan
lines, ANEK lines
and Superfast Ferries
provide daily service from Athens to Crete. There
are taxis available as well as buses near the port. If you
would like to rent a car, you need to get to the downtown
area were there is a number of rental agencies (20 minutes
walk or 5 minutes by taxi).
