Travel Information:

Transportation to Heraklion

The summer holiday season in Crete has not finished yet in October. Although quieter and with less people around, most tourist related activities, including restaurants, shops, etc. are still open. However, the offer of charter flights from most major European cities to Heraklion may have decreased substantially. There are also daily scheduled flights from most European capitals with Olympic air, Aegean airlines and the respective national airlines to Athens. Regarding US, the only direct flights between US and Greece are those between New York and Athens (operated by DELTA, CONTINENTAL and Olympic air), and between Philadelphia and Athens (operated by US Airways).

In case you fly to Athens, both Olympic air and Aegean airlines operate many flights per day between Athens and Heraklion airport (~45min flight). You can book tickets on line:

http://www.olympicair.com

http://www.aegeanair.gr/aegeangr/home/index.asp

Both companies offer low price tickets if you book well in advance.

You can also reach Crete by boat from Piraeus port. There are three companies which operate boat trips between Piraeus and Heraklion (~7hr trip): MINOAN, ANEK and SUPERFAST lines. You can book tickets on line in both cases:

Transportation from Heraklion to Ag. Nikolaos

It is a 45 min drive from the Heraklion airport to Agios Nikolaos and the hotel. The easiest way to reach the hotel from the airport is by taxi, but there is also a regular coach service, or you can drive by yourself.

a. By Taxi. There are plenty of taxis parked just outside the airport arrivals hall. We will announce the cost of the taxi ride as soon as we know the 2010 rates (sometime in early summer). A taxi can be shared by 4 people. Private transfers by taxi, from and to Heraklion airport, can also be arranged by the hotel (we will announce the fare sometime in early summer).

b. By bus (coach). The bus stop is just a 5 min walk from the port (close to the center of Heraklion), and there is a bus service about every 30min between Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos. For this reason the bus option is mainly recommended if you chose to travel to Crete by boat. Alternatively, you can also get a taxi to Agios Nikolaos from Heraklion port (it should cost as much as the taxi ride from the airport). The bus that departs from the port will also stop at the airport.

c. Rental car. All major car rental companies operate in Crete. You can make your bookings in advance and pick up your car at the airport or at the port. We would draw your attention to the following site:

http://www.premiercarjet.com

as it offers low cost rates for (reliable) car rental in Crete.

We will post directions for driving to Agios Nikolaos and the hotel on the conference web site.
