"RoboPol: optical polarimetric monitoring of blazars"

Abstract:

RoboPol is an ongoing long-term project taking place at the Skinakas
Observatory and mainly devoted to the optical polarimetric monitoring of
blazars. For the first time this kind of monitoring is performed for a
statistically rigorously selected sample of gamma-ray bright and faint
blazars. Because of unprecedented time allocation, our monitoring data
in conjunction with a monitoring at radio-frequencies and gamma-ray data
of Fermi LAT observatory allow us to get new important insights into the
properties of blazars.
 
In this talk we describe some general features of AGN polarimetry and
discuss important science goals of the project. We show also results of
the first observational season and make an outline of future plans for
the collaboration.
