========================================================================= "Probing the Low Mass X-ray binary/Globular Cluster connection in NGC1399" Prof. Maurizio Paolillo University of Napoli, Italy When: Friday 4 May 2012 at 12:15pm Where: 2nd Floor Seminar Room Abstract: I will present the result of a high-resolution, wide-field study of the connection between Globular Cluster and Low Mass X-ray Binaries in the giant elliptical NGC1399. Combining Chandra ACIS and HST/ACS observations we are able to probe the GC and LMXB population out to ~6 effective radii. With such data we can put constrains on the the formation scenarios of field- and GC-LMXBs. In particular we find evidence that LMXB formation in GCs is influenced by GC structural parameters, in addition to the well known effects of mass and metallicity, independently from galactocentric distance. Using stacking analysis we are able to constrain the faint end of the GC-LMXB luminosity function, showing that a break is required at L_x<8x10^37 erg/s. Finally we used this dataset to test new data-mining techniques, which allow to retrieve population of astronomical sources (e.g. GCs) even when only limited photometric information is available. =========================================================================
