==================================================== Title: "Unusual transients" Dr. Stephan Rosswog Jacobs University Bremen, Germany ===================================================== When: Monday, August 31st at 3.15 p.m. Where: 2nd Floor Seminar Room ===================================================== Abstract: Several large scale surveys of transient phenomena are about to start taking data. They promise to detect many thousands of "non-standard" transients per year. I will discuss several of these events, including signals that result from the tidal disruption of a main sequence star by a supermassive black hole in the centre of a galaxy. I will further discuss two recently discovered channels how to thermonuclearly explode white dwarfs in some kind of type Ia supernova none of which is tied to the Chandrasekhar mass.
