========================================================================= "Polarimetric LiDAR for desert dust characterization" Mr. Michael Kottas National Observatory of Athens When: Tuesday, 12 Sept 2017 at 1:00pm Where: 2nd Floor Seminar Room Abstract: In this talk, I will introduce the possibility of enhancing the retrieved optical information by the use of a polarimetric LiDAR, in order to adequately characterize desert dust particles. We aim to develop such a LiDAR, the WALL-E, in conjunction with Raymetrics SA, within the framework of the ERC project “D-TECT”, that was granted to Dr. Amiridis of NOA. The innovative system is comprised of two laser emitters, two telescope receivers, and four detectors, thus enabling it to perform vertically resolved polarimetry. The acquired information from this innovative system will undoubtedly be a valuable tool for (a) inversion algorithms in aerosol microphysics retrievals, (b) ice particle and aerosol-cloud interactions research, (c) validating possible preferential orientation of aerosol particles. =========================================================================
