========================================================================= "Statistical and Physical Infrared properties of AGN as measured by SWIRE" Dr. Evanthia Hatziminaoglou Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias, Spain When: Thursday, 15 December 2005 at 3:30pm Where: 2nd Floor Seminar Room SWIRE, the Spitzer Wide-area InfraRed Extragalactic survey is the largest of the Spitzer Legacy programs, covering ~49 sq. degrees in all IRAC (3.6 to 8.0 micron) and MIPS (24, 70 and 160 micron) bands. The final Legacy Extragalactic Catalogue will contain more than two million IR-selected sources dominated by luminous infrared galaxies, early-type galaxies, some 30,000 classical AGN and as many as 250,000 dust-obscured QSO/AGN. The SWIRE fields have extensive observations in other wavebands, particularly in the optical, near-IR and X-ray. This multitude of data allows for the first time a detailed study of the SEDs of AGN, the development of AGN candidate techniques free of the biases introduced by the traditional optical selection methods, the simultaneous investigation of the physics of the various regions composing these objects with particular emphasis on the dusty tori properties, and the study of their connection to normal and starburst galaxies. Detailed modeling of the dusty tori surrounding the AGN can greatly benefit from SWIRE data. The IRAC and MIPS 24 micron data points impose strong constraints on the model parameters, such as the torus size, density law, and optical depth. Models with intermediate outer radii and density decreasing with increasing distance from the center are favored, while low optical depths are not ruled out. ========================================================================= Evanthia obtained her undergraduate degree in Physics from the Univ. of Thessaloniki and her Ph.D. in observational astrophysics from Toulouse France in 2000. After a postdoc at ESO she has been working, since 2003, as a research associate with the SWIRE team at IAC in Tenerife. She will be in our department all day Thursday the 15th and Friday the 16th of December.
